There’s no way to sugar-coat it, oily skin can be difficult to manage. If you’re lucky, you’ll only get oily skin during the summer months, for others it’s a year-round battle.
Oily skin is more prone to pimples, large pores and a slick shine that seems to light up the whole room… and not in a good way. However, there is a silver lining… oily skin looks younger as it has more natural moisture and is less susceptible to wrinkles. It’s also more resilient and less susceptible to sensitivity.
An effective skincare routine for your oily skin will tick off on all of the following:
- Retrain the skin to produce less oil
- Strike the right balance of oils for overall skin health
- Clear and disinfect clogged pores
- Leave a clearer blemish-free complexion
What Causes Oily Skin?
In general oily skin is caused by overactive sebaceous glands, which could be a result of:
- Stress levels
- Stripping the skin of too much oil which dries it out and triggers an over correction by the sebaceous glands.
How do I know if I have Oily Skin?
Chances are, you’ll absolutely know if your skin is oily. But if there are any doubts, people with oily skin, generally notice:
- Extremely oily or shiny skin that covers the whole face. If your cheeks are dry, but your T-zone is oily, you may have Combination Skin, rather than Oily Skin.
- Enlarged pores all over the face
- Congested or clogged pores and visible blackheads
- Potentially mild to severe acne
HOW TO MANAGE OILY SKIN
Choosing the correct ingredients for your skin care routine is vital for maintaining skin health. These ingredients will be different again if you also suffer from acne.
For oily skin (without breakouts) look for the following ingredients:
- Non-comedogenic ingredients, which won’t clog pores
- Oil with a high linoleic acid content such as Rosehip, Evening Primrose, Hemp Seed or Grapeseed
- Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) such as Salicylic acid which is known to fight bacteria
- Jojoba Oil to break down and dissolves sebum
- Vitamin A reshapes the lining of your pores to avoid oil getting trapped inside and clogging it
If your skin is oily and you suffer from acne:
- Antiseptic botanicals like natural Tea Tree to effectively reduce breakouts
- Detoxing ingredients such as Kaolin or bentonite clay
- Exfoliants that contain Glycolic Acid
- Activated charcoal to draw out impurities, toxins dirt and oil
There are ingredients that all skin types should steer clear for skin health. This includes:
- Artificial Fragrance
- Mineral Oil
- SLS and SLES
For oily skin, we also recommend steering clear of:
- Drying cleansers, including mainstream acne management products which dry the skin in the short term triggering a corrective response by sebaceous glands
- Harsh scrubs
- Pore-clogging products, instead always look for non-comedogenic products that won’t clog pores
- Heavy oils or those with a high level of Oleic Acid such as coconut oil, camellia oil or sunflower oil.
- Occlusive ingredients that prevent water loss, such as Mineral Oil, Beeswax, Vegetable and other waxes, Paraffin and Lanolin

Once to three times per week
We recommend very gently exfoliating up to 3 times weekly to break up dead skin cells and remove buildup that may be clogging your pores. However, remember not to scrub too harshly as this will stimulate oil production and tear the outer layer of the skin resulting in lost hydration and inflammation.
