Managing Combination Skin
Whoever said skincare is straightforward hasn’t walked a mile in your shoes. Hydrating creams are too rich, cleansers are too dry and just when you’re on top of things, it all changes. The good news, you’re in good company – combination skin is very common. Even better; there are things you can do to strike a better balance, beginning with the right natural skincare routine.
There are a few key causes of combination skin. While we have limited influence over our genetics, choosing the correct skincare products and avoiding over-cleansing or over-exfoliating will help to manage symptoms of combination skin.
How do I know if I have Combination Skin?
- Skin that alternates between dry and oily
- Your T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin) is oily, with enlarged pores and potential breakouts while your cheeks are often dry.
What Causes Combination Skin
- Overactive sebaceous glands
- Incorrect skincare products for your skin type
- Over cleansing and exfoliating too harshly
Your Skincare Routine
An effective skincare routine for your combination skin will:
- Rebalance your skin
- Treat dry areas while balancing your skin’s oil production
HOW TO MANAGE COMBINATION SKIN NATURALLY
Choosing the correct ingredients for your skin care routine is vital for maintaining skin health.
Choosing the correct ingredients for your skin at the right time is vital for maintaining skin health. For combination skin, we recommend:
- Ingredients that mimic the structure of healthy skin, such as Hyaluronic Acid and Jojoba Oil.
- Balancing ingredients such as Aloe Vera, Vitamin E, Cucumber, Arnica
- Essential oils such as grapefruit, lemon, rosemary, lemongrass, lavender, geranium and carrot seed.
You know more than anyone that your skin can change at the drop of a hat. So, if your skin is leaning toward oily, look for products that contain Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid. These will cut through oil and fight bacteria, while reducing the size of and unblocking your pores. If your skin is more dry, look for Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) such as Lactic Acid to shed dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production.
As with all skin types, there are some ingredients and products to steer clear of to maintain your skin health. This includes:
- Artificial Fragrance
- Mineral Oil
- SLS and SLES
For combination skin, we also recommend steering clear of drying cleansers, harsh facial scrubs and pore-clogging products.
